Gestalt Principles

In 1910, psychologist Max Wertheimer had an insight when he observed a series of lights flashing on and off at a railroad crossing. It was similar to how the lights encircling a movie theater marquee flash on and off. To the observer, it appears as if a single light moves around the marquee, traveling from bulb to bulb, when in reality it’s a series of bulbs turning on and off and the lights don’t move it all. This observation led to a set of descriptive principles about how we visually perceive objects.

Prioritizing elements in web pages using Science

This series of posts will be a bit different from most of the random experiences posted in the web log. Most of the following is insipred from pioneers in the field of Design Thinking and Front End Design. Based on the foundations laid out, I will propose a methodology using which a web page can be better structured and orgranzized to improve a users experience. The goal of this series is to understand a web page from an individual perspective and manipulating the design based on his personality pro-actively.

Bring the past to the internet - Digitization of Print

I was working with a university a year back where I assisted them in digitization of a select collection. This involved careful planning lots of dirty work, one software dev, proof checking and 5 man team working for 45 days to complete it. The end result was immensly satisfying. The 320 books that were digitized were available to the public at the Digital Library of the University. Previously one would have to take prior permissions from a hierachy of people to be able to access these books due to the fragile nature they in and the value they hold.

A device lab is a responsive device holder which eases the process of responsive development or cross-device testing while building apps which are meant to be device agnostic.

Below are a few sample Device Labs.

Drupal as a Web Experience Management Layer

I was asked to speak at the Drupal Camp Bengaluru 2013. I choose the idea where Drupal was used as a Web Experience Management Layer in a complex project for Georgia Tech University.

The session covered the integration of Drupal as a Web Experience Management layer, with Moodle, which is the most accepted LMS for higher education today along with TIN CAN API ( the experience API) to record learning experiences, extended to Web Mobile interfaces in emerging markets

Intelligent Communication systems using Drupal, Nodejs and Arduino

I was asked to present my Home Automation and Management Systems at the Drupal Camp Delhi 2012. Below is the video to the entire presentation and the slides. The goal of the project was to control the entire house right from your Drupal website on a mobile. The intelligent mode notices that you arrive from your office every day at 6 pm and switches on the heater for you. Based on the season turns on the air heater or air cooler for you. You can pull out electricity statistics and charts along with lots of other cool stuff.
